There are many considerations that you need to think about before making the final decision. Below I have outlined some things to think about.

Questions to consider:

  • How flat is my lawn?
  • How much grass are you going to cut?
  • How much space do you have to move?
  • How close do you want to cut the grass?
  • How much do you want to pay?
  • How much power do you need?

Fuel Tank Volume (gallon): Choosing a tractor with a decent sized fuel tank means that you can cut grass for longer without having to refuel. This is something to consider when you have a large lawn to cut. The larger your fuel tank is more efficient you’ll be because you won’t  have to refuel is often.

Fuel Type: Fuel type is another consideration. One of the advantages of having a gas lawn mower is the fact that fuel easily accessible. Sometimes and you have a diesel engine fuel can be slightly more difficult to get.

Cutting Width: Cutting width is another aspect to consider because the wider your deck, the more efficient you will be. Also, depending on the size of your lawn having a smaller cutting width might be more important to you than a larger one. For example, if you live in town having a smaller cutting width would be important.

Cutting Height: Another important factor is cutting height. Being able to adjust the height carefully can make a difference between your lawn looking beautiful or ugly. Also, if you have on even ground being able to raise your cutting height up to 4 inches can make a huge difference.

Price: Price is often the most important factor will affect the type and the quality of mower you choose. Sometimes you can get away with a cheaper mower that will last for years, but this is rarely the case. Choosing the right mower from the start by paying a bit more can pay off down the line.

Power (HP): Depending on the type of grass you have, having extra horsepower can make your life a lot easier particularly when you hit those dense spots. Sometimes you do not need a high horsepower engine to get the job done.

Type: The type of tractor can play are factors well. Whether you’re looking for garden tractor or zero turning tractor these things can play a big role. For example, if you have little place to move around, a zero turning tractor might be a great choice, if you have the space, a garden tractor might be a good choice.

Transmission Type: Selecting between a hydrostatic transmission or a manual transmission is a big choice. Hydrostatic transmissions are easier to run but if they break down they can be a bit more complex to fix.

What is a lawn tractor

Lawn tractor: Lawn tractors are the smallest type of tractor you can get. They are less powerful and less expensive.

They can tow light carts and some spreaders. Some models can it even be used with a snowblower or a plow.

What is a garden tractor

Garden tractor: Garden tractors typically have larger cutting widths and a higher amount of horsepower.

They perform well on inclines and slopes. They are capable of pulling heavy-duty attachments and can potentially cultivate some soil.

What is a zero turning mower

Zero Turning mowers: Zero turning mowers can move quickly across your lawn.

They can cut grass up to a speed of about 8 miles an hour. One of the big advantages of zero turning mowers is their ability to turn on a dime and will save you time when maneuvering. One thing to note is that they do not do well on hills or inclines.

Trimble autosteer and the Ottawa Farm Show

trimble autosteerI recently attended the Ottawa Farm Show and I stopped at a few booths. One of those stops was at the Trimble booth.

I had quite in-depth conversation about the various parts of how to use the Trimble system.

Here’s what I learned:

The autosteer system becomes profitable for farmers who have 300 acres or more. Anything less than 300 acres and savings becomes less visible.

The main thing you can do the Trimble system is avoid overlap. If you have too much overlap with your planting or fertilizing, you can save a bit of money by using a Trimble system.

Ease of use

I was amazed to see how easy it was to use. I had never used the Trimble system before, but I found it very easy to pick up only after a few minutes.

While it was not as intuitive as a smart phone, it would be relatively easy to pick up for a person who loves technology.

Favourite feature

My favorite features was the fact that if you overlap something that you’ve already sprayed or planted it will shut off your planter or your sprayer .

That was one of the coolest features that I noticed.

What about older tractors?

They also have a system called EZ Steer that can be fitted onto an older tractor. Basically, it attaches to the steering column and turns the steering with a small motor.

This system is easy to set up and transfer to another tractor. I talked to the guys and they said it only takes about 30 minutes.

Here is a quick video showing your what it looks like.

Click here if you can’t see the video.

The system I found cost around $4000, and that does not include any kind of monitoring all.

Needless to say, it is very expensive. You have to make sure you have enough land to buy an auto steer system to make sure you get your return on investment.

Do you need auto steer?

Depending on how big your farm is, you may find an auto steer system very effective.

As I mentioned, 300 acres is the breaking point. If you have less than 300 acres, you may not find the system as helpful.

However, if you have more than 300 acres, you will definitely save money using this type of system.

Think about how much money in fuel you can save by not overlapping when you’re cultivating, planting or spraying.

One thing that I found out that I thought was very interesting was the fact that markers on your planter are costly.

Each marker can cost upwards of $6000. If you don’t buy markers on your planter, you can put that money into GPS.

There are a few unique uses for Trimble’s steering solution.

Here are a few of the uses:

  • Mark where rocks and fence posts are.
  • Mark where a bale of hay is left.
  • Use the system to navigate to bales of hay.
  • Auto shut of when overlap occurs.

These are a few of the options that I found interesting.

Auto steer options

Trimble offers a few different systems. They have the EZ Steer system, easy pilot system, and their autopilot automated system. I think any one would be a good addition for a farm. Of course it depend on how many acres you have.

How much does a Trimble System cost?

To get fully set up you could be looking at around $10-$15,000 or more depending on what you chose to do.

Also, you can get the Trimble people to set up the system on your tractor as well, which would be an additional cost.

Final thoughts

In the end, the many benefits of using a Trimble system are well worth it if the cost is justified.
